This event brought together professionals, researchers, policymakers, organizations, youth, and activists to rethink and discuss pressing issues in youth mental health.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We showcased our work in two formats: an <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">oral presentation<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> during a symposium and a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scientific poster<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/smjaction.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Presentation_Khoury-and-Incio-Serra_FV-1.pdf\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Oral Presentation: Youth Mental Health in Underserved Contexts<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As part of the symposium <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Youth Mental Health in Underserved Contexts<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, chaired by Srividya Iyer and Jai Shah (McGill University, Canada), our presentation provided a general overview of our project and our preliminary findings. We used a <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">timeline approach<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to illustrate the typical journey of a young person receiving child welfare services in Qu\u00e9bec and the psychosocial, relational, and psychological challenges they must confront.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This narrative highlighted the instability many youth experience within the system and the difficulties in providing <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consistent, tailored mental health care <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to youth in child welfare services. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The presentation sparked strong interest and led to thought-provoking discussions on the training of social workers and child protection workers, the tensions within a legally governed system, the definition of \u201ccomplex needs\u201d for youth, and how to adapt the child welfare and mental health systems to adequately and appropriately respond to young peoples\u2019 diverse needs and desires.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/smjaction.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/IAYMH-poster_final_170325.pdf\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scientific Poster: Mental Health Gaps in Child Welfare Services<\/span><\/b><\/a><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our scientific poster provided a concise summary of our <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">scoping review findings<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. It highlighted the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack of mental health standards<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> within Canada\u2019s child welfare services and underscored the <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">critical need <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for training in trauma-informed care, relationship-based practice, intersectional perspectives, cultural sensitivity and responsiveness, and youth-inclusive, friendly approaches. These gaps emphasize the urgent need for systemic improvements to ensure youth in care receive appropriate and effective mental health support.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Engaging with Global Research<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Beyond our own presentations, we attended a wide range of insightful presentations and research sessions from around the world.
